Could it have some sort of bios patch in s/w that they kept on a partition instead of in ROM? Since my daughter lost her restore discs, I requested and am waiting for back ups to be sent from Dell, but that's a week or two away. After a while, you may find that the Windows XP startup process gets slower and slower. ![]() I know Dell uses relatively small partitions for quick restore to factory settings (by accessing a full OS install on one partition) and they have diagnostic utilities in another. My next thought is around those partitions I deleted with the initial format. The system was not running this badly when my daughter asked for help. My second thought is there are a significant number of bad blocks on the drive and that is why the format took so long the OS doesn't slow down until perhaps after more of the disk is being used. The system only has 512 mb which I am going to max out to 2gb but that is not the issue because the system was running xp pro at sp2 and (later) sp3 and all was fine. After installing the sp2 update, I ran into the same problem - 20 minutes or so to boot up from shut down or restart. I installed various updates, rebooted and things were still OK. I reinstalled all the drivers, got online and proceeded to update the OS. I did the install and everything seemed to run fine. I went to bed and by morning the format was complete. The format was again very slow and took forever (lost track after 90 minutes) to go from 39 percent to 41 percent. ![]() Started with another format but this time installed an original XP (no service pack) OS. I thought there may have been something wrong with the format and/or OS install so i changed approach completely. ![]() Since it was a generic install, I assumed it was a driver issue and install all drivers from chipset to touchpad. But when I finished the setup and restarted, it took about 20 minutes to get me to the desktop. I installed XP Pro SP2 and it seemed to go fine. I let it go over night and it finished by morning. ![]() It went fine until about 39 percent when I thought it was hanging. I reformatted the entire drive into one partition (from the four or five it had). My daughter asked me to format the drive and reinstall OS on her Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop.
